I'm here

Not sure how this exactly works yet, because Jeff set it up for me, but I'll do my best. Just to let you all know, I finally made it to Djibouti. After an 8 hour flight to Atlanta to Fort Benning, then a 2 1/2 hour flight from Atlanta to Bangor Maine, then a 6 1/2 hour flight to Leipzig, Germany, then a 4 hour flight to Kuwait. From Kuwait it was a 2 hour flight to Qatar in a C-130, and then finally a 5 hour flight from Qatar to Djibouti. For those of you keeping track, that's 28 hours in an airplane (with NO frequent flyer miles!!!). And yes, it's hot here. Not as sandy as Kuwait or Qater, but still 'warm'. Apparently there are two options...the wind can come from the east off the ocean and make it 'cooler' (100 degrees), but then it's very humid. Or....the wind can come off the plains from the west to make it 140 degrees (but it's a dry heat). When I landed it was 'cooler' but more humid. Kind of like Hawaii weather on steroids I guess. Here is a test comment. Anyone who would like to post a comment for Amanda (and everyone for that matter) to see can post them here. Just click on the "Comment" link to the corresponding post and your comment will be posted to the website, and I believe (if we set this up right) to Amanda's email for her to see. Then in turn Amanda can comment back to your comment. Hopefully we will all be able to get the hang of this!

Hi, sounds like great swimming weather, hope the pool's open 24/7!

Hi Amanda! So dry heat is not a problem? What's the noise level like on a C130? Are they putting you to work right away or are you getting some R&R.

I can't go swimming yet...have to wait until the scab falls off of my smallpox vaccine site.

Anyone that says "yeah, it's hot, but it's a dry heat so it's not bad" is lying. Dry heat is still HOT. The C130 was pretty loud-I wore either headphones or ear plugs the entire time, but I was able to sleep for most of the trip. I'm just kind of walking around and getting orientated to everything-our first big trip isn't until July.

whassup, Aunt Naner!! it's 79 degrees here :) Do you walk around with sand in your teeth all the time??
Have you vaccinated a camel yet???

No camels quite yet...haven't left the camp. I might get to see some cheetahs on Sunday though. The sand isn't as bad here as some other places, but we did have a nice dust storm the other morning. And don't even talk to me about 79 degrees...it was 100 degrees at 7am.

Hey there! I can't imagine having to fly that long to get someplace!!! You must still be fighting the fatigue and I bet that the humidity & heat tends to make you sluggish even more so!! I still say though that this is going to be quite the adventure for you. How exciting! We are having great weather here (oops you didn't want to hear that! LOL) Did I tell you that Steve and Misty are expecting another boy? He'll still be tiny when you get back to the States. You take care and pace yourself for a few days. I can hardly wait to hear all about Africa. We love and miss you!

Hi Amanda. Trying to e-mail you on this blog and I can’t get it to work (even if my son says I’m not technology literate). Glad to see you made it safely. Take care – be safe. Love you! Karol

Dad said he couldn't get this to work today so I'm giving it a shot. Did the box you shipped over make it there?

On the day that mom got her hole in one we accepted an offer on the old house. Hurray! I told mom this morning (on our way back from our vacation) and she said, "Dangit! I KNEW I should have bought a lottery ticket!"

Glad to hear you are finally there safe and sound. Wish I could mail you some ice. :>)

Yes mom, the box I sent got here before I did.

Tell Aunt Kathy congrats on her hole in one...she should have bought a lottery ticket that day.

Congrats on the house selling, I bet that's a BIG relief. And Staci, ice 'would be perfection.' :-) Remember that episode?
